A Females in Food Podcast with Angela Dodd
“ I’ve developed this thing that I always say with my team, like, if you’re not happy at home, you won’t be happy at work.”
What would you do if you stepped into a CEO role… and you were the only employee?
That’s where Jennifer Jorgensen found herself when she took over Back to Nature Foods. After leading iconic brands, she made the leap into rebuilding a legacy business from the ground up—without a team, without data, and without a clear playbook.
What she did have was a strong product. Back to Nature’s cookies and crackers performed as well—or better—than major competitors in taste tests. The challenge wasn’t quality. It was perception.
At the time, the brand leaned heavily into “plant-based snacking,” which unintentionally signaled compromise on taste. Jennifer and her team uncovered a deeper insight: consumers don’t want rules when it comes to snacks—they want joy.
That shift led to a full brand reinvention. Inspired by its 1960s California roots, Back to Nature was rebuilt to feel vibrant, nostalgic, and culturally relevant. It wasn’t a tweak—it was a reset.
At the same time, Jennifer was building a team from scratch, prioritizing trust, collaboration, and a willingness to take risks. In a small, fast-moving company, culture isn’t optional—it’s everything.
To stay focused, she grounded the business in two key metrics: velocity and margin. As product performance began to climb—first in cookies, then across the portfolio—it was clear the strategy was working. Retailers responded, consumers returned, and the brand regained momentum.
Today, Back to Nature isn’t just growing—it’s relevant again.
Jennifer also shares how marketing has evolved into a far more complex, fast-moving role—but emphasizes that creativity is still what cuts through. In a world of data and AI, the brands that win are the ones that feel human.
Beyond business, she offers a powerful reminder: if you’re not happy at home, you won’t be happy at work. Her approach to leadership centers on boundaries, flexibility, and creating an environment where people can do their best work.
This conversation is a reminder that whether you’re building a brand or a career, clarity, courage, and a willingness to do things differently make all the difference.
